Democratic members of Congress escalated their criticism of the Trump administration Monday, arguing the president had bypassed congressional authorization requirements before launching strikes on Iran.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for an emergency debate under the War Powers Resolution, which requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to hostilities and limits operations to 60 days without congressional approval.

'The American people deserve to know the legal basis for this war. The White House cannot unilaterally commit us to a major regional conflict without a proper vote,' Schumer said on the Senate floor.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark introduced a resolution demanding the immediate withdrawal of US forces from the Iran campaign and a formal congressional declaration of war if the operations are to continue.

The White House dismissed the challenges, with National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stating the president 'has clear authority under Article II of the Constitution and existing AUMF legislation to conduct these operations.'

Several progressive Democrats called for impeachment proceedings, though senior party figures said that step would be premature and counterproductive while American forces were in the field.
